Hidden in Plain Sight: Mock Teen Bedroom Trailer Coming to Jones County School Conferences
The Jones County Safe and Healthy Youth Coalition is bringing the Hidden in Plain Sight mobile training experience to Parent-Teacher Conferences at all three Jones County school districts this October.
Created by YSS and supported in part by Iowa Health and Human Services State Opioid Settlement funds, Hidden in Plain Sight gives parents, school staff, and other caring adults an eye-opening look inside a simulated teenager’s bedroom. At first glance, it may look like a typical teen’s room—but throughout the space are items, symbols, clothing, hiding places, and other clues that may indicate substance use or other risky behaviors.
Participants will learn what to look for, what certain signs may mean, and how to recognize potential concerns that can easily be overlooked or misunderstood. The goal is to help adults become more informed, recognize warning signs, start important conversations, and intervene before risky choices lead to serious or life-altering consequences.
The Hidden in Plain Sight trailer will be available free of charge during Parent-Teacher Conferences:
- Anamosa Middle School: Tuesday, October 13, 2–7 p.m.
- Midland Jr./Sr. High School: Wednesday, October 28, 3–7 p.m.
- Monticello Middle School: Thursday, October 29, 4–8 p.m.
Parents and guardians are encouraged to stop by before or after their conferences. Cookies, crafts, or board games will be available for students while adults tour the trailer.
There is no cost to participate, and the experience is open to parents, guardians, school staff, and other adults who care about the health and safety of local youth.
